Dr. Alkanan is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and teaches periodontics at Pacific Northwest University's School of Dental Medicine, right here in Yakima.
An implant is only as good as the bone and gum around it. That is what a periodontist is trained to assess, build and protect — and it is the part most likely to be skipped when the price is the headline.
Your first visit is a conversation and a scan, not a sales pitch. We take a 3D CBCT image of your jaw so we can see exactly how much bone you have, where the nerves and sinuses sit, and whether the implant can go in straight away or needs a graft first. Then we sit down and go through it with you on the screen.
You leave with a written plan that spells out what's included — the scan, the surgery, any grafting, the connector and the crown, sedation if you want it, and follow-up visits — so there are no surprises later. If you'd like to understand what drives the price before you come in, we've written that up plainly.
Placing an implant is usually easier on patients than the extraction that came before it. The area is fully numbed, so you feel pressure but not pain, and afterward most people describe soreness rather than anything sharp — managed with ibuprofen, settled within two or three days.
If nerves are the thing keeping you away, tell us when you call. We offer IV sedation, and for many patients that turns the appointment into something they don't remember. For longer cases, general anesthesia with a certified registered nurse anesthetist can be arranged.
The surgery itself is 45 minutes to an hour and a half for a single implant, and you go home the same day. Then the bone needs three to four months to fuse to the implant before it can carry a crown. Plan on four to six months from first visit to finished tooth for a straightforward case; longer if you need bone grafting first.
Sometimes we can place the implant on the same day we remove the failing tooth, which saves months. Your scan tells us whether that's safe for you.
Our Yakima office is in-network with Delta Dental and with the Careington network. Other plans are welcome and we'll file the claim for you as an out-of-network provider. We also offer monthly payment plans through CareCredit and others — see insurance and financing.
Your consultation, 3D scan, surgery and follow-up visits all happen at our Yakima office. Our imaging, surgical set-up and sedation are all here, including for grafting and full-arch cases. Weekend appointments are available by arrangement for surgical cases.

Most patients have some insurance coverage, and we'll check yours and tell you what it will and won't pay. For the balance, we work with three financing companies so you can spread the cost over time — many patients qualify for plans with no interest if paid within the promotional period.
